Under the revised 2025 ASQA Standards for RTOs, all Registered Training Organisations’ are now required to conduct a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment prior to a student’s enrolment into any VET qualification or course.
This change reflects ASQA’s focus on strengthening quality assurance, student support, and training outcomes across the sector.
The LLN assessment serves several key purposes:
Ensuring learner suitability
It confirms that prospective students possess the core skills necessary to engage with the course content, workplace training, and assessment requirements.
Identifying support needs
It allows the RTO to recognise where a learner may require additional assistance, such as foundation skills support, reasonable adjustments, or referral to specialist services.
Protecting student welfare
By aligning learners with training that matches their current skill level, the RTO helps to reduce attrition, improve course completion rates, and safeguard against students enrolling in courses beyond their capacity.
Demonstrating compliance
It provides clear evidence that the RTO has taken steps to meet Standards 1 and 5, which require RTOs to support learners appropriately and ensure enrolment decisions are made transparently and in the best interest of the student.
This mandatory process ensures that learners are properly prepared before commencing their chosen course, supports equity of access, and upholds the integrity of qualifications issued by the RTO.
